oh noes Hughes is a Nazi in COS that’s horrible and problematic and gross!!
okay but are we going to talk about how Hughes participated in GENOCIDE in the manga????
‘cause uh, for all we know Hughes LEFT the Nazi party after the events of COS (he sure isn’t wearing that pin anymore). whereas manga!Hughes DEFINITELY KILLED A LOT OF PEOPLE IN ISHVAL.
I’m a CoS/1st anime fan, too, but it does make sense for people to respond differently to both situations.
I myself am much more bothered by Hughes being a Nazi than what happened at Ishbal. Because Nazis were real. And they are still around.
No matter what, Ishbal is still fictional, and the massacre never happened in real life. It’s an allegory, and a painful one, but it makes sense for people to react much more viscerally to a character espousing Nazism, with all the awful real world connotations of that.
I’m not saying that in-story what manga!Hughes did wasn’t reprehensible, because it was. But I, personally, find it difficult to get over Hughes in CoS being a Nazi.
This was a birthday present for my then-beta, who asked for a manga page based on one of her favorite scenes from Mirrorworld.
It was actually super fun to draw!
Actually, since I’m currently practicing drawing comics and stuff… If anybody wants to tell me their favorite Mirrorworld scene, I’ll draw you a little comic of it! :) heck, it’ll be a lot prettier than this, because I drew this like 3 years ago

I honestly had no idea it was even a “thing”, but I keep on seeing it around, and I can’t help but think it goes against all logic and politics ever.
I mean, Amestris was a dictatorship whose citizens seemed to mostly deal with the fact that their government was commiting genocide. Even if they weren’t okay with that, you had Roy and Riza involved in the whole coup and ridding the world of evil and all that crap.
In general, historically, the conquerees, as a nation, will end up with many more issues than the conquerors, who can often go on their merry way. Furthermore, The FMA world has no UN to impose sanctions, and nobody to demand reparations from Amestris for what they’ve done. At the end of the series, Amestris hasn’t really been humiliated or badly torn apart by war. There’s nobody to really convince Amestrians to blame Roy for anything, anyway.
So really, who exactly is going to turn around and put the very people who helped save them all from The Big Bad on trial? Why would people suddenly remember this genocide that happened years ago, and why would they suddenly care?
And especially since Roy has shown that he’s devoted to helping the Ishbalans - it would be really darn STUPID of them to want to get rid of him, because frankly, most politicians care more about looking out for number one and taking care of the majority than using tax money to support the disadvantaged.
In short, I don’t see it, though I’d love to hear some explanations.
